That fine yellow powder that coats most of Durham is more than just the first dusting of spring. It’s also a visible reminder of why our allergies are in full bloom. Itchy eyes. Painful sinuses. Sniffling, sneezing, and a general feeling of exhaustion–allergies give a whole new meaning to the term Spring Fever.
This is my sister’s first spring in Durham, NC. She had a terrible Easter weekend with her allergies. She doesn’t usually suffer from allergies, so she assumed it was her makeup or dirty contacts. She made the mistake of rubbing her eyes and that fine dust was like sandpaper under her eyelids.
When she realized she was having an allergic reaction to all the pollen, she took her contacts out, rinsed her eyes with cold water, covered them with an ice compress, and even used antihistamine drops. But her eyes and sinuses continued to bother her.
Today she came to the office in the hopes that a chiropractic adjustment would relieve allergy symptoms. Within a few minutes after the adjustment, the pressure in her sinuses was gone and she wasn’t itching her eyes.
This doesn’t happen all the time, of course. An adjustment is not a miracle. But sometimes it does happen. And it did today. I’m thankful and so is she.
But what did happen? Why would a chiropractic adjustment clear allergy symptoms?
Allergies are the result of a hypersensitive immune system. A tired, taxed immune system overreacts when it’s exposed to allergens. A healthy immune system is able to combat common allergens without over-reacting. One of the best ways to combat allergies is by strengthening the immune system.
Studies have shown people under chiropractic care have a healthier immune system. The reason is scientific: our internal systems are all interconnected. The nervous system, endocrine system, and immune system work interdependently to create optimal health.
In fact, the two upper cervical bones in our neck are often referred to as the “headache and sinus” bones because they have such an effect on these areas of health. When either of these bones is misaligned, they can restrict or pinch the nerves that run through them. When those nerves are restricted, it affects the sympathetic nervous system, pituitary gland, eyes, sinuses, and so much more. The result is a lowered immune system that causes sinus problems, increased allergic reactions, and increased ear infections, colds and flu.
In my sister’s case, her adjustment was able to release the stress on the nerves enough to re-engage its communication with the immune system. Her immune system stopped over reacting and her symptoms settled down.
People under regular chiropractic care have been shown to have a 200% greater immune competence. That’s great news for allergy sufferers, because it means there is a way to get relief from all the annoying itchiness and the painful sinus headaches.
When allergies flare, please don’t suffer in silence. One of the most effective ways to combat allergies is with chiropractic adjustments that remove the pressure from the cervical nerves so the immune system relaxes and the body heals itself.
