DO YOU SUFFER FROM ALLERGIES?
More and more people are turning to chiropractic care as a medication-free alternative to fight allergies.
For millions of people, the anticipation of an end to a cold winter is dampened by the inevitable arrival of … allergies. It’s gotten to the point where we even call it “Allergy Season.”
If you live in Durham, NC, you know about the ‘pollenpocalypse’ we sometimes get in the spring. If you suffer from allergies, you dread the arrival of that fine yellow powder.
Here’s some good news for all you who are oppressed by pollen or other common allergens: Chiropractic adjustments to your spine can help your body fight allergies naturally. How? We’ll get to that in a minute. First let’s talk about what’s happening in your body when you get an allergic reaction like itchy eyes, painful sinuses, sniffling, sneezing, and a general feeling of exhaustion.
What causes allergies?
Allergic reactions are one of the most common and obvious examples of a weakened or hypersensitive immune system. If your body is reacting in weird ways to pollen, dust, cat hair, or other allergens, it means your immune system isn’t doing its job properly and instead is overproducing neutralizing chemicals like histamines.
A tired, taxed immune system overreacts when it’s exposed to allergens. But a healthy immune system is able to combat common allergens without over-reacting. So only makes sense that one of the best ways to combat allergies is to strengthen the immune system.
This is where chiropractic care comes in.
How do chiropractic adjustments help with allergies?
When misaligned vertebra put pressure on the nerves in your spinal column, one of the possible negative effects is weakened immunity.
Studies have shown people under chiropractic care have a healthier immune system. The reason is scientific: our internal systems are all interconnected. The nervous system, endocrine system, and immune system work interdependently to create optimal health.
In fact, the two uppermost bones in the neck are sometimes referred to as the “headache and sinus” bones because they have such an effect on these areas of health. When either of these cervical bones is misaligned, they can restrict or pinch the nerves that run through them. When those nerves are restricted, it affects the sympathetic nervous system, pituitary gland, eyes, sinuses, and so much more. The result is a lowered immune system that causes sinus problems, increased allergic reactions, and increased ear infections, colds and flu.
Chiropractic care is not a guaranteed cure for allergies. But people under regular chiropractic care have been shown to have a 200% greater immune competence.
As more people grow tired of medication that only masks the symptoms, they are turning to chiropractic and finding natural relief.
True story: One patient’s experience
A patient came in shortly after Easter one year with red, itchy eyes. It was her first spring in Durham, NC, and she was having a terrible time with allergies. She doesn’t usually suffer from allergies, so she assumed it was her makeup or dirty contacts. She made the mistake of rubbing her eyes and that fine dust was like sandpaper under her eyelids.
When she realized she was having an allergic reaction to all the pollen, she took her contacts out, rinsed her eyes with cold water, covered them with an ice compress, and even used antihistamine drops. But her eyes and sinuses continued to bother her.
She was already a believer in the benefits of chiropractic care because of how the adjustments had helped her neck pain. So that day she came to the office in the hopes that a chiropractic adjustment would relieve allergy symptoms. Within a few minutes after the adjustment, the pressure in her sinuses was gone and she stopped itching her eyes.
This doesn’t happen all the time, of course. An adjustment is not a miracle. But sometimes it does happen. And it did that day.
What’s wrong with allergy medication?
Traditional allergy medications contain antihistamines and can certainly bring relief to allergy symptoms. But that’s just it. They only help the symptoms. They do nothing to tackle the root problem of your immune system. Furthermore, they may actually do serious damage in the long run. An article published in the May 1994 Journal of the National Cancer Institute discussed research showing that certain antihistamines (Claritin, Hismanal and Atarax) make cancerous tumors grow faster in lab rodents. No thanks!
Three options for allergy treatment:
1. Stay in your house with the windows closed until fall.
2. Pop a pill and enjoy the partial, temporary relief it offers and try not to think about the long-term damage it might be causing.
3. Get adjusted, remove the interference to your nervous system, increase your immunity, and allow your body to fight off those sneeze-inducing invaders.
What do you have to lose? If you’re sick of suffering with allergies, give chiropractic care a try.
