What is Gonstead Chiropractic?

Did you know that there are many techniques and philosophies of chiropractic? We are primarily a Gonstead office, which is one of the most traditional, advanced, and scientific methods of adjusting.

Gonstead is a chiropractic technique named after Clarence Gonstead (1898-1978). He became passionate about chiropractic after having terrible rheumatoid arthritis, which left him bedridden. After a series of chiropractic adjustments, he was able to walk again, and later enrolled at Palmer College of Chiropractic (the same one that Dr. Martin attended!). Over the course of his illustrious career as a chiropractor, he introduced the biomechanical idea that spinal subluxation creates inflammation and nerve pressure, and has related neurological implications. He had the world’s largest chiropractic clinic – complete with a hotel and a private airplane runway! He also developed the nervoscope, which measures bilateral temperature differences in the spine. Another significant contribution was Dr. Gonstead’s relentless focus on precise and specific adjustments, utilizing the innovative cervical chair and knee-chest table.

Dr. Martin follows the Gonstead technique, which means he adjusts based on the fact that the proper foundation of the pelvis and lower back is key to the body’s overall structure and function. This is why we take full spinal x-ray sets of every patient! We believe that seeing the structure of your bones is vital to an accurate evaluation and adjustment. Dr. Martin takes great care to further analyze the spine through use of the nervoscope and palpation at every visit. When there is misalignment in the vertebra or a tilt in the pelvis, pressure on the vertebral discs can cause swelling, pinching, and compressing of the nerves that run along the spinal column. These nerves are responsible for transmitting impulses, also called messages or signals, throughout the body, so Dr. Martin’s chiropractic adjustments help not only your spinal alignment – but also your nervous system. He will biomechanically position the body and then adjust accurately, precisely, and painlessly.

We love the Gonstead technique, and we think you will too! Call or text us at 919-794-4455 for a free consult, or schedule your new patient appointment online here.
