How to think about vaccines: A primer

“There’s nothing wrong with changing your opinion on something after learning new information.” -Unknown

Introduction

Warning! Before you continue reading The Highly Controversial Vaccine Series, take a deep breath!

Nothing stirs the soul like a good conversation on vaccines. It’s one of those topics where there is no subtlety, no space for discussion. It seems you have to either be in one of two camps: anti-vax or a shill for “science.”

It’s surprising that we can’t talk about vaccines. It’s so emotional. It’s frustrating that we can’t actually a conversation and that it’s so polarizing.

And since different vaccines work differently, are targeting specific issues, have different histories, and create ethical questions, it seems like it would be fair to have open and honest conversations about it.

Did you know?

The parent companies have vaccine manufacturers have been repeatedly sued and found guilty of false advertising, hiding research and causing injury in death. Take a moment to read about the medication Thalidomide or Rofecoxib and you should immediately develop a healthy skepticism to our pharmaceutical companies.

Now consider that pharmaceutical companies are immune from lawsuits because of a 1986 law that shields them from liability for any potential vaccine injuries. What other industry has the government provided blanket liability for? Thinking about that issue stirs up a little healthy skepticism in me!

I’m curious why within a year, the number of recommended vaccines started increasing significantly after that law passed. And why the vaccine scheduled for the United States is so significantly elevated compared to the vaccine schedules for other developed countries.

Continuing the conversation

In future articles, we may talk about specific illnesses or diseases – for example, the hep B vaccine and the vitamin K shot. It’s worth considering each vaccine as an individual discussion and each potential concern that the vaccine is allegedly preventing when considering what kind of chemicals you want to inject into you or your children’s bodies.

Natural immunity

Part of any discussion on vaccines should be a discussion of natural immunity. Natural immunity, as it turns out, is pretty awesome! And something that chiropractors have emphasized for over 130 years. Discussing natural immunity, most recently in the context of Covid and the mandates for the Covid vaccine, was a favorite subject to ridicule from those who were allegedly pro-science (as though discussing natural immunity is not also science.)

Here in Durham

I don’t think you have to be an immunologist to have a discussion about these issues – you just need to read, learn, think, and make a decision. I don’t think this is a decision that other people should be making an enforcing on you or your children. If you have not read books and/or articles on both sides of this subject, then I would invite you to take a more open-minded approach. We have books at our office in Durham that are available for people to borrow, covering this issue from all angles.

Durham’s nickname is the City of Medicine, and with all of the universities and pharmaceutical companies in the surrounding areas of Chapel Hill and Raleigh, we are heavily influenced by their presence, money, and messaging. For over 100 years, holistic and wellness-oriented family chiropractors have been relentless in keeping this conversation alive.

Conclusion

In future articles of The Highly Controversial Vaccine Series, we will discuss more about vaccines, but my hope is that people will listen to different perspectives, hear different values, learn to moderate extreme language, and be willing to change their opinions.

People come to our office with all kinds of opinions about all kinds of things, but one thing that many of our patients have agreed on is that we provide excellent chiropractic care to our practice members! Our door is open to people of different beliefs, different values, and different opinions. One of the values that we think is important at Precision Chiropractic is to be respectful of others, no matter what differences may exist.

We look forward to the opportunity to serve you as we continue to encourage and support natural healthcare in Durham. NC and the surrounding areas of North Carolina!
