Only 10 percent of the nervous system can feel pain
Don’t all nerves feel pain?
No.
You know how a cavity in your tooth can be slowly forming without you feeling pain, or knowing about it at all? Or how heart problems can be developing without you feeling symptoms for a long time?
The reason you don’t always feel these symptoms is because large parts of the nervous system can’t perceive pain. In the same way, problems can develop in the spine for years before they cause symptoms. Pain is really the last thing to show up after there’s been a problem developing for a while.
As a matter of fact, only 10 percent of the nervous system feels pain, while the rest regulates automatic body functions, processes what you sense through your five senses, and controls voluntary movement.
So what does this mean?
Everybody should be checked out by a chiropractor, even if you don’t feel pain.
Your nervous system deserves regular, consistent attention even if you’re not constantly in pain. Remember the examples of the slowly forming cavity and the quietly developing heart issues? The same sort of process happens with your spine, which further compromises your nervous system and affects all aspects of your life as you live, move, grow, and age. Get checked before you feel pain. Preventative care can be the best care!
Without proper care, your spine and nervous system can work in a dysfunctional way, and by the time you feel pain, there’s usually a lot of work to do to repair it. It’s never too late, but just like your teeth or your heart, the sooner you start taking care of your spine, the more life you’ll get out of it.
